2017 was an absolutely incredible year in sneakers. I started this list as a “Top 10” but then I started looking around my office and that turned into a top 15 real quick…and then top 20…and finally told myself to stop already and decide on 25. It would take me hours and some absurd points based ranking system to order these from 25 to 1 so I’m not even going to bother. Instead, enjoy my unfiltered and unranked take on my 25 favorite purchases of 2017. Happy New Year everyone!
adidas Consortium x HAVEN UltraBoost
I added four pairs of Ultra Boost to my collection this year but it’s this HAVEN collaboration that stands out to me from the rest because of the uncaged triple black design. Another favorite of mine from 2017 is the Multicolour 3.0.
Nike x KITH Maestro II "Red/Black"
I loved these the moment I saw photos thanks to the retro look and black and red color blocking but they’re even more amazing in person. The quality and attention to detail on this shoe is top notch and the zipper and strap lacing system was a unique touch. Anytime I can add something unique like this to my collection its a no brainer.
adidas YEEZY 700 BOOST Wave Runner
I copped these in the Summer with no idea oh how I would feel when I got them. I was intrigued but not convinced I needed them. With that said, the unique and retro look of the Wave Runner, coupled with Boost, makes them a stand out for me and a welcome addition to collection.
Nike x Off-White Air Max 90 "The Ten"
I’m lucky enough to own seven pairs of “The Ten” but it’s this Air Max 90 that comes out on top as my favorite. The deconstructed nature of the shoe by Virgil made for the perfect design of the AM90 while still keeping the original silhouette in shape. A close runner up for me is the Air Force 1 Low, both pairs are beautiful but need to be seen in person to be appreciated.
Nike x Acronym Lunar Force 1
This is one of those shoes you need to see in person to truly appreciate. While I do have one of the original colorways from 2015, this clean triple white take is a great addition on a truly unique design of the AF1. I’ll only rock these zipped half way up and you won’t convince me to do so otherwise.
adidas x Wings+Horns NMD R2 Primeknit
This was the last shoe designed for the fall collection by wings+horns and easily their best release of the year. I’m not a big fan of the NMD R2 but what they did with the super soft Primeknit upper and premium detailing through makes this one of my favourite adidas drops for 2017.
NikeLab x John Elliott Vandal "Anthracite"
John Elliott’s design aesthetic and craftsmanship is evident throughout this premium take on the Vandal. These could have been priced at $300 USD (retail was $150) and still have been worth the price tag . These are easily one of my favorite releases this year, so much so that I purchased both colorways and doubled up.
Air Jordan Retro 4 "Royalty"
One of my favorite Jordan releases of 2017 thanks to the soft hairy suede upper and gold accents. These look premium and super clean on foot which makes them an easy rock with any outfit. Add the “OVO” logo to this shoe and it would be on everyones top 10 list for 2017.
adidas x MASTERMIND EQT 93/17 Mid "Mystery Ink"
The mid cut look to this EQT collab is what made the 93/17 interesting to me. The extra thick boost always looked odd on the original models because the upper seemed too short and this higher cut fixed that. I also don’t have many blue sneakers so this was an easy decision between the two releases (the other being black).
Nike VaporMax Flyknit Women's "Summit White"
I believe my final VaporMax total for 2017 is pushing 10 pairs, and while I love all of them, I thought I would highlight this pair because it’s so awesome that I was willing to squeeze into a women’s size 12. The VaporMax is my choice for sneaker of the year and you honestly couldn’t have gone wrong with any colorway this year.
Nike Flyknit Trainer "OG White"
Just as my all time favorite sneaker was discontinued Nike brought back a pair that everyone wanted in the Flyknit Trainer. I’ve picked up every colorway since the OG White release and while they all look awesome, this is the standout release for sure.
adidas x Daniel Arsham New York Present
I’m a big fan of Arsham’s work so his collection so far with adidas has been a welcome one. Each release has come with its own short film and some dope “time capsule” inspired packaging. While the first drops UV light message was cool, this Boost based lifestyle release brought the best of both worlds.
NikeLab Zoom Fly SP "Breaking 2"
If you didn’t cop a pair of Zoom Fly this year, you’re missing out. A new level of comfort, combined with a unique design, has made the SP edition one of this years low key hits.
KAWS x Air Jordan 4 Retro "Wolf Grey"
One of my most prized pickups this year. As a long time fan of KAWS artwork these were a “must have” as soon as word started trickling out about a potential release. The final product more than met my expectations thanks to the KAWS graphic stitched design, glow in the dark sole, premium suede and leather detailing.
NikeCraft Mars Yard 2.0
I love everything about the Mars Yard 2.0, from the amazing packaging and materials used to the story/inspiration behind the shoe. The revamped Mars Yard 2.0 brought everything to the table that you’d want from one of the years best releases.
Nike Air Max 97 OG "Japan"
I purchased five pairs of AM97 this year and while the “Silver Bullet” is absolutely amazing I’m going to give some love to another other OG colorway. The neon green Air Max sole on these is the perfect look for the 97, in my opinion.
Air Jordan 31 Westbrook PE "Why Not?"
The same shoe Westbrook wore to cap off his MVP season and set the triple double record was a must have for me and the sneaker delivered with an awesome Jordan 3 cement inspired design.
adidas YEEZY BOOST 350 V2 "Bred"
A lot of Yeezys dropped this year but it was the cleanest pair that still stands out as my favorite. While I enjoyed the prominences of the models with the vibrant stripes, something about the simplicity of these just feels perfect to me. It might be the fact they remind me more of the V1 but regardless, there was a “perfect” V2 colorway for everyone this year.
NikeLab x Acronym Air Force 1 Downtown Hi SP
These are wild and not for everyone, but I of course loved them and purchased two of the three colorways. The Acronym details and materials brought an awesome tech look to the AF1 that we’d never really seen before.
Nike Flyknit Racer "Watercolor"
You all know I love my Flyknit Racers so when I heard Nike was preparing to discontinue them I had to reach out to Kurtzastan to make me a custom pair. The result was this watercolor inspired take on the Racer which has almost always seen sold colors and shapes make up it’s design.
Nike Air Max 1 "Master"
There was a lot of awesome Air Max 1 releases this year but the “Master” brought the best of all of them with an awesome tribute design during Air Max month. The OG releases this year were great but I just love how funky these are and how they’ll always turn heads.
Air Jordan 12 Retro "Bordeaux"
The Jordan hype was down this year but there was still a handful of awesome colorways that released including this beautiful bordeaux pair of 12s. The soft suede upper was a great touch to this shoe which gave it a luxury feel. The “wolf grey” pair was just as good but I preferred the pop of color that these gave me.
Air Jordan 5 Retro Premium "Take Flight"
This Jordan 5 broke the bank but man where they worth it because they are amazing. Premium leather covered the entirety of this sneaker, including the midsole and interior, in a dope olive and vachetta tan colorway. I won’t buy many premium Js like this but I’m glad I copped these.
Air Jordan 1 Retro High "Gotta Shine"
This was a great year for the Jordan 1 and while I love my Aleali May 1s, Top 3 Gold, Royal 1s and Quai 54s, all those pairs garnered a lot of attention justifiably. Something about these 1s has always struck a cord with me and I love them that much I wanted to remind you how under the radar these were in 2017.
NikeLab ACG KMTR
Another awesome ACRONYM based design. This time in the from of an ACG shoe that was versatile enough for me to rock in the summer on a hike and wear through the city in the pouring rain.
